On the heels of an epic weekend we did our recap of the weekend in sports!
The Euro Cup reached a very dramatic conclusion as the final happened on Sunday. England was hosting in Wembley Stadium against Italy as a fantastic tournament reached its crescendo! England thrilled the home crowd and the nation with the earliest goal ever as Luke Shaw scored just two minutes into the match. The entire country was thrown into a frenzy as they have been starving for a major football trophy for a couple generations. The 3 Lions then seemed to take their foot off the gas pedal and go into a park the bus formation for most of the match. Italy tilted the field and took over control and finally capitalized in the 67th minute as Leonardo Bonucci tied the game at one. Italy sustained an attack but were unable to get a second goal to decide it. Even 30 minutes of extra time didn't break the deadlock and forced penalty kicks to decide the champion of Europe. In a very dramatic shootout Italy were the crowned the kings of the Euro when their goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saved the final shot on goal. The party happened all over the world in Italy and little Italy in most major cities on the planet. We showed some footage from our local gathering that spurred on a street dance party.
We touched on the Stanley Cup boat parade that looked really fun especially for Nikita Kucherov who has had an epic celebration going for a week!
We discussed the incredible Wimbledon victory for Novak Djokovic who has now joined the elite mark of 20 Grand Slam titles! The big 3 with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal now all sit tied with 20 Grand Slam titles each. Novak has won the last three and seems poised to become the G.O.A.T. if he is not already. The Joker now has his sights set on the Calendar Slam as he will head to the US Open in late August into September. Rod Laver with his Calendar Slam in 1962 in the only other man in the Open era to win all four in the same year.
We briefly talked about the Team USA struggles as they have lost the opening two games to Nigeria and Australia in the exhibition schedule heading towards the Tokyo Olympics in a couple of weeks. They had a record of 54 and 2 in exhibition play leading into this week. Nigeria is the first African Nation to ever beat the Americans. Just nine years ago the US team beat Nigeria by 83 points and 5 years ago also blew them out by 43 points. The team has to regroup and figure out how to gel as a team and try and not embarrass themselves.
The conversation remained in basketball but shifted to the NBA Final where Milwaukee scored a decisive victory winning big 120 to 100 in game three. Phoenix is still up two games to one but have now had doubt crept in to their domination of this series. The Bucks are now 8 and 1 at home and looked really good in making this a series. The Phoenix Suns had their issues after playing two great games in Arizona. Devin Booker had an off night and didn't play much down the stretch as the game seemed out of reach early. Deandre Ayton was in early foul trouble and wasn't able to play much either. Giannis took big advantage of the absence of the big man and was huge with 41 points 13 rebounds and 6 assists. Game 4 goes on Wednesday and all signs point to this series being tied at two games apiece after this next game.
The UFC 264 card was held on Saturday at the T Mobile arena in Vegas in front of a sold out crowd. The main event was the trilogy fight between Dustin " Diamond" Poirier and The Notorious Conor McGregor. The animosity was amped up for this one and the anticipation was huge. Unfortunately the fight had a tough ending as McGregor broke his leg near the end of the 1st round and couldn't continue. We showed a TikTok post by Conor after he endured 3 and a half hours of surgery to repair the damage done to his leg. There was a lot to unpack with this one. The co-Main event was an incredibly impressive performance from Gilbert Burns over Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson. We broke down the 12 fight card and discussed so many aspects of the great stacked evening.
